1818 Pennsylvania's 6th Congressional District Special Elections
During the 15th Congress, there were two special elections in the , both held in the year 1818. The 6th district at that time was a plural district with two seats, both of which became vacant at different times in 1818. The first vacancy was caused by John Ross (DR) resigning on February 24, 1818 and the second was caused by Samuel D. Ingham (DR) resigning July 6. March election The first election, to fill the vacancy left by Ross' resignation, was held March 3. 15th United States Congress
The 15th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in the Old Brick Capitol in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1817, to March 4, 1819, during the first two years of James Monroe's presidency. The apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the Third Census of the United States in 1810. Both chambers had a Democratic-Republican majority. John Ross (representative)
John Ross (February 24, 1770 in Solebury, Bucks County, Pennsylvania – January 31, 1834 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania), was a Representative to the U.S. Congress from Pennsylvania. Ross studied law in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was admitted to the bar in 1792 and engaged in practice in Easton, Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1800. He was clerk of the orphans’ court and recorder from 1800 to 1803, county register from 1800 to 1809, and burgess of Easton in 1804. Ross was elected as a Republican to the Eleventh Congress. He was again elected to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Congresses. He resigned in 1818 to become president judge of the seventh judicial district of the State. He was transferred to the State supreme bench in 1830 and served until his death. Ross was married to Mary Ross (1774–1845); they were the parents of Thomas Ross, another congressman. Thomas Jones Rogers (1781 – December 7, 1832) was a Democratic-Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Pennsylvania's 6th congressional district from 1818 to 1823 and for Pennsylvania's 8th congressional district from 1823 to 1824. Early life Thomas J. Rogers (father of William Findlay Rogers) was born in Waterford, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1784 with his parents, who settled in Easton, Pennsylvania. Samuel Sitgreaves (March 16, 1764April 4, 1827) was a United States representative from Pennsylvania. Early life and education Sitgreaves was born in Philadelphia in the Province of Pennsylvania. He pursued classical studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar in Philadelphia on September 3, 1783 and began practice in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1786. Career Sitgreaves was a delegate to the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention in 1790, and was elected as a Federalist to the Fourth and Fifth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1795, until his resignation in 1798. Sitgreaves was one of the managers appointed by the House of Representatives in 1798 to conduct the impeachment proceedings against Senator William Blount. Samuel Moore (congressman)
Samuel Moore (February 8, 1774February 18, 1861) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Samuel Moore was born in Deerfield (now Deerfield Street) in the Province of New Jersey. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia with an A.B. degree in 1792 then worked as an instructor at the university from 1792 to 1794. He studied medicine and practised in Dublin, Pennsylvania, and later in Greenwich, New Jersey. Moore spent several years in trading to the East Indies. He returned to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and in 1808 purchased and operated grist and oil mills at Bridge Point, Pennsylvania, (now Edison) near Doylestown. He later erected and operated a sawmill and woollen factory. Moore was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Samuel D. Ingham.
