Tobias Smollett
Tobias George Smollett (baptised 19 March 1721 – 17 September 1771) was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for picaresque novels such as ''The Adventures of Roderick Random'' (1748), ''The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle'' (1751) and ''The Expedition of Humphry Clinker'' (1771), which influenced later novelists, including Charles Dickens. His novels were liberally altered by contemporary printers; an authoritative edition of each was edited by Dr O. M. Brack Jr and others. John Moore (archbishop Of Canterbury)
John Moore (26 April 1730 – 18 January 1805) was Archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England. Life Moore was the son of Thomas Moore, a butcher, and his wife Elizabeth. He was born in Gloucester and was baptised at St. Michael's Church, Gloucester. He was educated at The Crypt School, Gloucester. He was a student at Pembroke College, Oxford (matriculated 1745; BA 1748; MA 1751). After ordination, he was for some years tutor to Lord Charles Spencer and Lord Robert Spencer, the younger sons of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough. On 21 September 1761, he was preferred to the fifth prebendal stall in the church of Durham and, in April 1763, to a canonry at Christ Church, Oxford. On 1 July 1764, he received the degrees of B.D. and D.D. On 19 September 1771, he was made Dean of Canterbury, and on 10 February 1775, Bishop of Bangor. John Ewer
John Ewer (died 1774) was an English bishop of Llandaff and bishop of Bangor. He is now remembered for an attack on the American colonists, prompted by their indifference to episcopacy. Life The son of Edward Ewer, born at Belchamp St Paul, Essex. He was educated at Eton College, and matriculated in 1724 at King's College, Cambridge, of which he became Fellow in 1727. He took the degrees of B.A. 1728, M.A. 1733, and D.D. 1756. On leaving college he was appointed assistant-master at Eton. He afterwards become tutor to John Manners, Marquess of Granby (1721-1770), who presented him to the richly endowed rectory of Bottesford, Leicestershire, in 1735: Ewer went as Lord Granby's tutor on his Grand Tour of 1739-1740. On 1 March 1738 he was appointed by patent to a canonry of Windsor, with which he subsequently held the rectory of West Ilsley, Berkshire. Edward Harley, 4th Earl Of Oxford And Earl Mortimer
Edward Harley, 4th Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer, (2 September 1726 – 11 October 1790), styled Lord Harley from 1741 to 1755, was a British peer and Tory politician. Early life Harley was the eldest son of Edward Harley, 3rd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer and Martha Morgan, daughter of Welsh politician William Morgan. His two younger brothers were John Harley, Dean of Windsor and then Bishop of Hereford; and the politician Thomas Harley, who was Lord Mayor of London and also sat in Parliament. He was educated at Westminster School between 1735 and 1744; and then Christ Church, Oxford, graduating with a Doctor of Civil Law in 1748. Sir William Owen, 4th Baronet
Sir William Owen, 4th Baronet (1697?–1781), of Orielton, Pembrokeshire, was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons for 52 years from 1722 to 1774. Owen was the eldest son of Sir Arthur Owen, 3rd Baronet, and his wife Emma Williams, daughter of Sir William Williams, 1st Baronet. He matriculated at New College, Oxford, on 16 June 1713, aged 16. He married Elizabeth Lloyd, daughter of Thomas Lloyd of Grove, Pembrokeshire, on 12 December 1725. He married as his second wife his cousin Anne Williams, daughter of John Williams of Chester, on 26 July 1728. Owen was returned as Member of Parliament (MP) for Pembroke Boroughs on the Orielton interest at a by-election on 13 November 1722. He voted with the Administration in every recorded division. He was returned unopposed in the general elections of 1727 and 1734 and won a contest in 1741. Robert Clive
Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive, (29 September 1725 – 22 November 1774), also known as Clive of India, was the first British Governor of the Bengal Presidency. Clive has been widely credited for laying the foundation of the British East India Company rule in Bengal. He began as a writer (the term used then in India for an office clerk) for the East India Company (EIC) in 1744 and established Company rule in Bengal by winning the Battle of Plassey in 1757. In return for supporting the Nawab Mir Jafar as ruler of Bengal, Clive was granted a jagir of £30,000 () per year which was the rent the EIC would otherwise pay to the Nawab for their tax-farming concession. When Clive left India he had a fortune of £180,000 () which he remitted through the Dutch East India Company.
