Joseph Vernet
Claude-Joseph Vernet (14 August 17143 December 1789) was a French painter. His son, Antoine Charles Horace Vernet, was also a painter. Life and work Vernet was born in Avignon. When only fourteen years of age he aided his father, Antoine Vernet (1689–1753), a skilled decorative painter, in the most important parts of his work. The panels of sedan chairs, however, could not satisfy his ambition, and Vernet started for Rome. The sight of the whales at Marseilles and his voyage thence to Civitavecchia (Papal States' main port on the Tyrrhenian Sea) made a deep impression on him, and immediately after his arrival he entered the studios of whale painter Bernardino Fergioni and marine landscapist Adrien Manglard. Manglard and Fergioni initiated Vernet into seascape painting. In 1734, Vernet left for Rome to study landscape designers and maritime painters, like Claude Gellee, where we find the styles and subjects of Vernet's paintings. Marianne Ehrenström
Mariana "Marianne" Maximiliana Christiana Carolina Lovisa Ehrenström, née ''Pollet'' (9 December 1773 – 4 January 1867), was a Swedish writer, singer, painter, pianist, culture personality, memoir writer and lady-in-waiting. She was a member of the Academy of the Free Arts and an honorary member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. She is foremost known for her memoirs, which are regarded as a valuable historical documentation, especially about the contemporary cultural life. Life Marianne Ehrenström was born in Zweibrücken, Germany, to the Swedish Commendant of Stralsund in Swedish Pomerania, Lieutenant General Johan Frans Pollett, and the dilettante painter Johanna Helena von Pachelbel-Gehag. She was given a good education, and her first language at home was reportedly French, though she also spoke German, and was later to learn Swedish. Moses Haughton The Younger
Moses Haughton (7 July 1773 – 26 June 1849) was a British engraver and painter, often of miniatures. Life Born in Wednesbury in the Black Country, the nephew of the painter Moses Haughton the elder, he moved to Liverpool in 1790. There he became a friend of William Roscoe and possibly studied under George Stubbs before enrolling at the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1795. At the R.A. he was a classmate of J. M. W. Turner. In 1796 William Roscoe mentions Haughton as a 'young engraver' of note. From 1803, Haughton was the resident engraver to Henry Fuseli, and it was largely through Haughton's prints that Fuseli's work became widely known; He painted a well known Miniature of Fuseli and his wife Sophia Rawlins. He became a close friend of Henry Fuseli, and resided with Fuseli's family in the Keeper's Apartments at Somerset House. Engraved Gem
An engraved gem, frequently referred to as an intaglio, is a small and usually semi-precious gemstone that has been carved, in the Western tradition normally with images or inscriptions only on one face. The engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art form in the Ancient world, and an important one in some later periods. Strictly speaking, ''engraving'' means carving ''in intaglio'' (with the design cut ''into'' the flat background of the stone), but relief carvings (with the design projecting ''out of'' the background as in nearly all cameos) are also covered by the term. This article uses ''cameo'' in its strict sense, to denote a carving exploiting layers of differently coloured stone. The activity is also called ''gem carving'' and the artists ''gem-cutters''. References to antique gems and intaglios in a jewellery context will almost always mean carved gems; when referring to monumental sculpture, counter-relief, meaning the same as ''intaglio'', is more likely to be use ... Luigi Pichler
Luigi Pichler (January 31, 1773 in Rome – March 13, 1854 in Rome) was a German-Italian artist in engraved gems. Son of Anton Pichler and half-brother and student of Giovanni Pichler, Luigi was an apprentice to his greatly renowned 39-year older brother and painter Domenico de Angelis.''The Grove Encyclopaedia of Decorative Arts.'' He travelled to Vienna, where he, in 1818, was made professor of gem-engraving at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, and where he, working for Francis I, created replicas of some of the most famous gems in Austria as part of the ''Vienna Cabinet'', Handley, Marie Louise.
