Society Of United Irishmen
The Society of United Irishmen was a sworn association in the Kingdom of Ireland formed in the wake of the French Revolution to secure "an equal representation of all the people" in a national government. Despairing of constitutional reform, in 1798 the United Irishmen instigated Irish Rebellion of 1798, a republican insurrection in defiance of British Crown forces and of Irish sectarianism, sectarian division. Their suppression was a prelude to the abolition of the Protestant Ascendancy Parliament of Ireland, Parliament in Dublin and to Ireland's incorporation in a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, United Kingdom with Kingdom of Great Britain, Great Britain. William James Conolly
William James Conolly (died 2 January 1754) was an Irish landowner and Whig politician who sat in the Irish House of Commons from 1727 to 1754 and in the British House of Commons from 1734 to 1754. Early life Conolly was a nephew of William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons from 1715 to 1729, and was the son of Patrick Conolly, originally of County Donegal, younger brother of William. William and Patrick had fled to England from Ireland in 1688, but while William had returned, Patrick remained and married Frances Hewett, one of the children of Neale Hewett and Mary Halford of Dunton Bassett, Leicestershire. There were two children, William and his sister, and they grew up at Dunton Bassett until 1713 when their father died, having recently buried their mother. Andrew Todd (fur Trader)
Andrew Todd (c. 1754–1796) was an Ulster merchant and fur trader at Montréal and Louisiana. Born into a wealthy family at Coleraine, County Londonderry, he was the son of Daniel Todd (1735-1783) of Randalstown, Co. Antrim, and his wife Letitia Thornton, sister of Lt.-General Sir William Thornton. He came to North America to work in the trading firm of his uncle, Isaac Todd, who was the business partner of James McGill at Montreal. He became a junior partner of the firm and in 1791 was admitted as a member of the Beaver Club. In 1794, the Spanish Governor, Francisco Luis Héctor de Carondelet, granted him an exclusive monopoly over all the trade in Louisiana; highly sought after particularly by Canadians as it was then still separate to the United States. This gave him the exclusive right to the valuable trade on the Upper Mississippi River, the Missouri River and the area north of Ohio. Patrick O'Kelly
Patrick O'Kelly (1754–c.1835) was an Irish writer and eccentric. O'Kelly was born in Loughrea, Ireland, and was noted in his lifetime for poems such as ''Killarney'' (1791) and the satire, ''Doneraile Litany'', (1808). He was familiar with the upper echelons of literary society, becoming acquainted with Sir Walter Scott in 1821, and George IV in Dublin in 1821. He translated ''The History of Ireland'' by James Mac Geoghegan, written in France in the 1730s, from the original French: his translation was published in Dublin in 1831. Cornelius Heeney
Cornelius Heeney (1754, King's County – May 3, 1848) was an American merchant, politician, and philanthropist. A one-time partner of John Jacob Astor, Heeney served in the New York State Assembly from 1818 to 1822. He established the Brooklyn Benevolent Society which continues to grant scholarships to students attending a number of colleges and universities in the New York area. Life Heeney was born in King's Co. (Offaly) in Ireland 1754. He spent some time with a relative in Dublin learning the mercantile trade. He emigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia at the age of 30.On the voyage his ship was struck by lightning when entering the Delaware River. Oystermen, acting as rescuers, charged a dollar for each passenger put ashore. Charles Henry Coote, 2nd Baron Castle Coote PC (25 August 1754 – 22 January 1823), known as Charles Coote until 1802, was an Irish politician. Background and education A member of the Coote family headed by the Earl of Mountrath, Coote was the son of the Very Reverend Charles Coote, Dean of Kilfenora, by Grace Tilson, daughter of Thomas Tilson. Sir Eyre Coote was his younger brother. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Dublin. Political career Coote was returned to the Irish House of Commons for Queen's County in 1776, a seat he held until 1783, and then represented Maryborough until 1798.
