This is a list of Swedish kings, queens, regents and viceroys of the Kalmar Union. History The earliest record of what is generally considered to be a Swedish king appears in Tacitus' work '' Germania'', c. 100 AD (the king of the Suiones). However, due to scant and unreliable sources before the 11th century, lists of succession traditionally start in the 10th century with king Olof Skötkonung, and his father Eric the Victorious, who also were the first Swedish kings to be baptized. There are, however, lists of Swedish pagan monarchs with far older dates, but in many cases these kings appear in sources of disputed historical reliability. These records notably deal with the legendary House of Yngling, and based on the Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus, Eric the Victorious and Olof Skötkonung have often been classified as belonging to the Swedish house of Ynglings, tracing them back to Sigurd Hring and Ragnar Lodbrok (whom Saxo considered to belong to the House of Yngling). Christina, Queen Of Sweden
Christina ( sv, Kristina, 18 December (New Style) 1626 – 19 April 1689), a member of the House of Vasa, was Queen of Sweden in her own right from 1632 until her abdication in 1654. She succeeded her father Gustavus Adolphus upon his death at the Battle of Lützen in 1632, but began ruling the Swedish Empire when she reached the age of eighteen in 1644. The Swedish queen is remembered as one of the most learned women of the 17th century. She was fond of books, manuscripts, paintings, and sculptures. With her interest in religion, philosophy, mathematics, and alchemy, she attracted many scientists to Stockholm, wanting the city to become the "Athens of the North". The Peace of Westphalia allowed her to establish an academy or university when and wherever she wanted. In 1644, she began issuing copper in lumps as large as fifteen kilograms to serve as currency. Björngårdsteatern
Björngårdsteatern ('Bear's Yard Theater'), also called Christian Thums Commedi-huus ('Christian Thum's Comedy-house') and Theums Spelehus ('Theum's Play-house'), was a theatre in Stockholm in Sweden, active between 1640 and 1655. It was possibly the oldest theatre in Scandinavia, but the information is scarce and it is unconfirmed if the theater permit was in fact used. It was in any event a popular tavern managed by Christian Thum. History In 1637, Christian Thum (d. 1655) bought the ''Björnegården'' ('Bear's Yard') at Södermalm at St Paulsgatan and Björnegårdsgatan in Stockholm. The house was named "Bears' Yard" because it was a local since long used for Blood sport and bear- baiting. Christian Thum also known as även von Thum, Thumb, Theun and Thun (d. 1655), was a Swedish (originally German) actor and theater director. He belongs to the earliest identifiable professional actors active in Sweden, was the leader of the theater of the Swedish royal court in 1628-1645, and the founder of the likely first theater in Sweden and Scandinavia, '' Björngårdsteatern '' (1640). Life Christian Thum was from Germany, but it is unknown from where. He himself stated that he had been active in Sweden since 1615, but he is confirmed as such for the first time in Kalmar in 1624. He performed a theater play for queen Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg in 1628, and was from that point until 1637 engaged at her court as an actor, though not much is known of his activity. Elisabet Juliana Banér (''née'' of Erbach; 22 January 1600 - 29 May 1640), was a German noble, married to the Swedish Field Marshal Johan Banér in 1636. She is considered to have wielded a certain influence upon Banér and the Swedish army during the Thirty Years' War. She was the daughter of George III, Count of Erbach-Breuberg and his fourth wife, Countess Maria of Barby. Life In Arolsen on 2 March 1620, Elisabeth Juliana married Count Georg Louis of Löwenstein-Scharfeneck. Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna
Baron Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna (15 June 1587 – 27 November 1640) was a Swedish statesman. Born either in Tyresö, Sweden, or in Reval (modern Tallinn, Estonia), he was the son of Privy Councillor Gustaf Gabrielsson Oxenstierna and Barbro Axelsdotter Bielke. As such he was brother of, among others, Lord High Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. Career Oxenstierna began studying in Uppsala. He continued to study abroad, in German towns Rostock, Wittenberg and Jena. After his return to Sweden, he was in the service of King Charles IX from 1604. From 1612 he was chancellor and chief adviser of Duke John, son of former King John III. Also in 1612, Oxenstierna was appointed governor of Estonia. Åke Henriksson Tott (or Achatius Tott; 1598–1640) was a Finland, Finnish soldier and politician. His estates included Ekolsund Castle, Ekolsund in Sweden, Sjundeby in Finland, Polchow in Swedish Pomerania and Lihula in Swedish Livonia. He was born in Lohja to Princess Sigrid of Sweden and nobleman Henrik Klasson Tott. He was appointed Privy Council of Sweden, Privy Councilor in 1630, and List of Swedish Field Marshals, Field Marshal in 1631. In the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), he commanded troops at the Battle of Grubin, in 1627 and the Battle of Breitenfeld (1631), Battle of Breitenfeld, in 1631.
