Thomas Óge Martyn
Thomas Óge Martyn, Mayor of Galway, fl. 1533-c. 1577. Early life Martyn was a merchant of Galway and a member of the Martyn (surname), Martyn family, one of the Tribes of Galway. He was the son of former Mayor of Galway, Wylliam Martin. West Bridge and Mills In 1558 he obtained a grant from Mary I of England, Queen Mary to build a mill on the west side of the River Corrib, Corrib river, on condition that he build a new stone bridge defended with gates and battlements. It was completed in 1562 and bore a plaque declaring that Thomas Óge and his wife Evelina Lynch ''"caused this bridge and mill to be made"''. The bridge and mills was demolished c. 1800 and rebuilt as the Bridge Mills by the Murphy family. The rebuilt bridge is now called O'Brien's Bridge. Later life and descendants Thomas Óge served as bailiff of Galway from September 1533 to September 1534, and served twice as Mayor of Galway for the terms 1549–1550, and 1562–1563. Muircheartach Óg Ó Cíonga
Murtagh King ( ga, Muircheartach Ó Cionga; c. 1562 – c. 1639) was an Irish Old Testament translator and scribe. Overview King was a member of an Irish bardic family, who were residents of the barony of Kilcoursey, County Offaly, known as Fox's Country. They were poets, scribes, and drafted legal documents for their patrons, mainly the families of Fox and Mageoghegan. Writing in 2001, McCaughy states "What we can say is that the Muircheartach Ó Cionga that we are concerned with in this study was one of a learned poetic family of the name who are referred to quite frequently in the sources, some of whose poetry survives (a good deal of it religious), and that they are located in the barony of Kilcoursey in Fox’s Country." Muircheartach first apparent appearances are as ''Murtagh O Kinge'' of Kilcolly and ''Murtho O King'' of Fox's County in fiants of the 1590s. The Bishop of Killaloe ( ) is an episcopal title which takes its name after the town of Killaloe in County Clare, Ireland. In the Roman Catholic Church it remains a separate title, but in the Church of Ireland it has been united with other bishoprics. History The Diocese of Killaloe was one of the twenty-four dioceses established at the Synod of Rathbreasail in 1111. The boundaries of the diocese consisted of almost all of County Clare, the northern part of County Tipperary and the western part of County Offaly. Its Irish name is ''Cill-da-lua'' (Church of Lua), so named from St Mo Lua, an abbot who lived in the late 6th century. At the Synod of Kells in March 1152, Killaloe some lost territory when the dioceses of Kilfenora, Roscrea and Scattery Island were created.
