Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
Úrvalsdeild kvenna; English: Women's Premier League, known as Subway deild kvenna for sponsorship reasons, is the highest basketball competition among women's clubs in Iceland. It is administrated by the Icelandic Basketball Federation. It was founded in 1952 and, until 2007, it was known as 1. deild kvenna (English: Women's First division). 2021–22 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
The 2021–22 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 65th season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna (basketball), Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 6 October 2021 and concluded on 1 May 2022 with Njarðvík women's basketball, Njarðvík after beating Haukar women's basketball, Haukar in the Úrvalsdeild finals, 3–2. Competition format The participating teams first play a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 28 games. The top four teams qualify for the championship playoffs whilst the bottom team will be relegated to 1. deild kvenna (basketball), 1. deild kvenna. Skallagrímur Women's Basketball
The Skallagrímur women's basketball team, commonly known as Skallagrímur, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Skallagrímur, based in Borgarnes, Iceland. It currently plays in Úrvalsdeild kvenna. History Skallagrímur started its women's program in 1958. In 1963, it participated in the national tournament and finished as the runner-up to ÍR. In 1964 it won its first national championship after finishing first in the national tournament. In the championship clinching game, Skallagrímur defeating ÍR 23-22 behind Sigrún Kristjánsdóttir 17 points. In 2016-2017 it finished with the third best record in league, while also making it to the Icelandic Basketball Cup finals where it lost to Keflavík, 65-62. John Hudson (basketball, Born 1954)
John Hudson (born May 29, 1954) is a retired American professional basketball player. After being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1976, Hudson went on to gain considerable fame in Iceland as one of the first foreign born professional players in the country. College career Hudson played college basketball for the Concord Mountain Lions from 1975 to 1976. In 1976, he was selected to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Tournament team after averaging 21.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. Professional career Hudson was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 10th round of the 1976 NBA draft but did not make the opening day roster. In August 1978, he signed with reigning Icelandic champions KR, becoming one of the first foreign born professional players to play in the Úrvalsdeild karla. Dirk Dunbar
Dirk Dunbar (born 28 October 1953) is an American former basketball player and coach. He was one of the first foreign players to play in Iceland where he led the Úrvalsdeild karla in scoring and won the Icelandic Cup in 1978. College career Dunbar played basketball for Central Michigan University and was the Mid-American Conference third leading scorer as a freshman. He was plagued by injuries during his stay at Central Michigan, missing all but 11 games of his sophomore season due to two knee surgeries. He red shirted his junior year before deciding to transfer to Eckerd College in January 1976. At Eckerd, he set the schools single game and season scoring records. He played for ÍR in the 1950's before turning to coaching. He coached at ÍR for almost 50 years, including its men's and women's senior teams, winning several national championships. Einar Bollason
Einar Gunnar Bollason (born 6 November 1943) is an Icelandic former basketball player, coach and TV analyst. As a player, he won the Icelandic championship six times with KR men's basketball, KR. In 2001, he was named to the Icelandic basketball team of the 20th century and the coach of the 20th century by the Icelandic Basketball Association. In 2020, he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Falcon from the president of Iceland. Early life Einar was born in Vesturbær in Reykjavík. The Vestri women's basketball team, commonly known as Vestri, is a basketball team based in Ísafjörður, Iceland. It is part of the Íþróttafélagið Vestri, Vestri multi-sport club. History The club was founded in 1965 as ''Körfuknattleiksfélag Ísafjarðar'' (KFÍ).
