Élie-Oscar Bertrand
Élie-Oscar Bertrand (March 3, 1894 – October 21, 1980) was a businessman and political figure in Ontario, Canada. Bertrand represented Prescott in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1929 to 1949. He was born in L'Orignal, Ontario in 1894, the son of Louis Bertrand. He married Armande Scott in 1915. He was a merchant at L'Original and served as clerk for the municipal council and was mayor from 1922 to 1929. Bertrand was first elected to the House of Commons in a 1929 by-election held after Louis-Mathias Auger resigned his seat. He held the Prescott seat until he was defeated in 1949 by Raymond Bruneau. Shortly afterwards, Bertrand was named to the Canadian Farm Loan Board, a predecessor to Farm Credit Canada Farm Credit Canada (FCC; known as Farm Credit Corporation until 2001) is Canada's largest agricultural term lender. Prescott was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1953. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867, and consisted of the County of Prescott. The electoral district was abolished in 1952 when it was merged into Glengarry—Prescott riding. The House of Commons of Canada (french: Chambre des communes du Canada) is the lower house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the Senate of Canada, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. L'Orignal, Ontario
L'Orignal () is a Franco-Ontarian village and former municipality, now part of Champlain Township in eastern Ontario, Canada. Its population in 2016 was 1,450. L'Orignal likely took its name from its location on the Ottawa River once known as Pointe à l'Orignac ( French for "Moose Point"), where moose crossed the river. It was one of the seigneuries of New France. History In 1674, the Company of New France granted the Seigneurie de L'Orignac (later renamed the Seigneurie de Longueuil) to François Prévost. Louis-Mathias Auger
Louis-Mathias Auger (April 3, 1902 – March 6, 1966) was an Ontario teacher and political figure. He represented Prescott in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1926 to 1929. He was born in Contrecoeur, Quebec in 1902, the son of Louis Auger, and moved to Hawkesbury, Ontario with his family in 1912. Auger had studied at the University of Ottawa and went on to teach there. He defeated Gustave Évanturel to win a seat in the House of Commons in 1926. During his term in office, he was articling with a lawyer in L'Original and studying law part-time at Osgoode Hall. He resigned his seat in 1929 after being accused of raping a young woman from his constituency who had come to see him in the House of Commons about possible employment in the public service. Auger was finally acquitted of the charge of rape but found guilty of seduction and was sentenced to two years in Kingston Penitentiary, the maximum penalty for that crime, after five trials and two appeals ov ... Raymond Bruneau (June 12, 1917 – July 5, 1971) was an Ontario translator and political figure. He was a member of the House of Commons of Canada representing Prescott and defeating the 24-year incumbent Liberal MP, Élie-Oscar Bertrand, to sit as an Independent Liberal from 1949 to 1953. He sat for Glengarry—Prescott as a Liberal from 1953 to 1957. He was born in Hawkesbury, Ontario in 1917, the son of Joseph Bruneau.
