49–'17'' is a 1917 American silent Western film directed by Ruth Ann Baldwin and starring Joseph W. Girard, Leo Pierson and William J. Dyer. Baldwin began work on writing and directing a silent film called ''49–'17,'' in 1917. It was the first Western directed by a woman. The film was five reels, and according to ''The New York Clipper'', it was "being produced on a more elaborate scale than any play she has yet handled". Based on the short story "The Old West Per Contract", it starred Joseph Girard and Leo Pierson. Plot The film opens on Judge Brand and his secretary, Tom Reeves, lounging in their office as the Judge reminisces about his life in the Old West. Brand tells Tom about how he and his partner, Adams, participated in the Gold Rush. Leo Pierson
Leo Pierson (1888-1943) was an American film actor who was active during Hollywood's silent era. He was married to director and screenwriter Ruth Ann Baldwin. Biography Leo was born in Abilene, Kansas, to Charles Pierson and his wife, Maude; Charles was an immigrant from Sweden. Later on, he moved to Los Angeles and attended St. Vincent's College, where he began appearing in stage plays and graduated in 1907. His first known film role was in the 1911 short ''The Profligate''. He acted in dozens of films from 1911 through 1919, the year he appears to have changed gears and focused on his work as a production manager. He married screenwriter and director Ruth Ann Baldwin on February 19, 1917, the same year he appeared in her Universal films ''A Wife on Trial'' and '' '49-'17''. Ruth Ann Baldwin was a journalist who became a silent film writer and director active during the 1910s, one of the few women to direct in the early era of filmmaking. Despite the fact that she was one of the first female directors in America, not much is known about her, but the work she did in the 1910s was relevant to the society she lived in. Early life Ruth Ann Baldwin was born in September 1886 in West Suffield, Connecticut, to Charles Baldwin and Abby Taylor. Her father died when she was young, and she and her mother relocated to the San Diego, California, area. Ruth Ann attended school in National City, California, National City, where her musical talents were evident, before forging a career as a journalist. Phyllis Maude Haver (January 6, 1899 – November 19, 1960) was an American actress of the silent film era. Early life Haver was born in Douglass, Kansas to James Hiram Haver (1872–1936) and Minnie Shanks Malone (1879–1949). When she was young, her family moved to Los Angeles, California. Haver attended Los Angeles Polytechnic High. After graduating, she played piano to accompany the new silent films in local theaters. Career Haver auditioned for comedy producer Mack Sennett on a whim. Sennett hired her as one of his original Sennett Bathing Beauties. Within a few years, she appeared as a leading lady in two-reelers for Sennett Studios. In 1923, Buster Keaton cast her as the female lead in his short ''The Balloonatic''. Zasu Pitts (; January 3, 1894 – June 7, 1963) was an American actress who starred in many silent dramas, including Erich von Stroheim's epic 1924 silent film ''Greed'', and comedies, transitioning successfully to mostly comedy films with the advent of sound films. She also appeared on numerous radio shows. Her career as an entertainer spanned nearly 50 years, and she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Her parents named her "ZaSu" as an amalgamation of the two maiden aunts she had been named for. Early life ZaSu Pitts was born in Parsons, Kansas, to Rulandus and Nelly (''née'' Shay) Pitts; she was the third of four children. Her father, who had lost a leg while serving in the 76th New York Infantry in the Civil War, had settled the family in Kansas by the time ZaSu was born.
