Spanish Government Departments
The Spanish government departments, commonly known as Ministries, are the main bodies through which the Government of Spain exercise its executive authority. They are also the top level of the General State Administration. The ministerial departments and their organization are created by Royal Decree signed by the Monarch and the Prime Minister and all of them are headed by a Cabinet member called Minister. Although the main organization is established by the Premier, the ministers have autonomy to organize its own department and to appoint the high-ranking officials of the ministries. It exists the possibility of ministers without portfolio, which are minister-level officials entrusted with a specific task and that do not head a department. As of 2022, there are currently 22 ministerial departments. Carme Chacón
Carme Maria Chacón Piqueras (; March 13, 1971April 9, 2017) was a Spanish lawyer, lecturer and politician who was minister of Defence from 2008 to 2011 in the cabinet led by Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Member of Spanish Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE) since 1994, she was elected member of the Parliament of Catalonia and vice president of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, the lower house in the Spanish Parliament. In 2007, she entered the cabinet led by Spanish Prime Minister José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero as minister of Housing. A year later, she became the first woman to take charge of the Spanish Ministry of Defense. Pío Cabanillas Gallas
Pío Cabanillas Gallas (13 November 1923 – 10 October 1991) was a Spanish jurist and politician, who held different cabinet posts and served as a deputy in the European Parliament. Early life and education Cabanillas was born 13 November 1923 in Pontevedra. His father was a lawyer, and his uncle, Roman C., was a poet. Cabanillas held a law degree. Career Cabanillas was a member of the Council of the Realm, which was the highest advisory body in the Francoist Spain. He was the minister of information and tourism in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Arias Navarro which was formed on 4 January 1974 under Francisco Franco. Cabanillas replaced Fernando de Liñán in the post. Cabanillas was removed from office in October 1974 on the orders of Franco due to "being too liberal in lifting press censorship." Rafael Arias-Salgado
Rafael Arias-Salgado (26 January 1942, Madrid) is a Spanish politician. The son of Gabriel Arias-Salgado, a minister under Francisco Franco, Franco and brother of Fernando Arias-Salgado : a former head of the Spanish TV company and a diplomat. Leopoldo Ramón Pedro Calvo-Sotelo y Bustelo, 1st Marquess of Ría de Ribadeo (; 14 April 1926 – 3 May 2008), usually known as Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, was Prime Minister of Spain between 1981 and 1982. Early life and career Calvo-Sotelo was born into a prominent political family in Madrid on 14 April 1926 with his father, Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo, and his mother, Mercedes Bustelo Márquez. The Secretary of State for Relations with the Cortes and Constitutional Affairs (SERCAC) is a high-ranking official within the Government of Spain in charge of the relations between the executive and the legislative branches.
